Old TV’s had an aspect ration of 4:3 for every 4 units wide they were three units tall, modern TVs are wide screen, they are 16 units wide by 9 units tall. This is what we mean by aspect ratio.
This becomes an issue when you have images of different aspect ratios and want them to appear the same size, for example these two cats below.
In order to make them appear the same size you have two simple options which can be done in most image editing packages
Stretch/Squash
You can stretch or squash one image the make is larger/smaller as appropriate, the problem with this method is you will end up distorting the image.
Crop
You can crop an image to make it smaller, the problem with this is you will lose part of the image.
If you have more advanced software such as Adobe Photoshop you may have the option to use AI to expand an image. These features tend to only be available in the more expensive packages.
