Filtered content

What is filtered or blocked content?

“Filtered” or “blocked” content means a website that a network has chosen not to allow. Public networks, like those in libraries, schools, colleges and council buildings, filter certain types of website to help keep everyone using them safe.

If you’ve just seen a “page blocked” message, this is why. It isn’t a fault with your device or your internet connection, and it doesn’t mean you’ve done anything wrong.

Why do networks filter websites?

Networks filter content for a few common reasons:

To protect children and young people from age-inappropriate material.
To block sites flagged as a security risk, such as scams or harmful software.
To meet the safeguarding rules that schools, libraries and public services have to follow.

Different places filter different things, so a site that’s blocked on one network may be fine on another.

What can I do if a site I need is blocked?

  • If you don’t need that particular site, you can simply go back or close the tab and carry on.
  • If you think a site has been blocked by mistake, or you need it for work or study, speak to a member of staff where you are, they can check it or help you.
  • You can keep browsing other websites as normal.
  • Staying safe and confident online
